Tenkara Summit 2017 Approach

Tenkara Summit 2017 Approach

I am excited about the approach of the Tenkara Summit 2017 in Estes Park, CO. Yours truly will be attending the Summit as a volunteer and as a Signature Fly Tier for Tenkara USA. I have read a number of really cool posts from a number of people who are attending the Summit. Reading what these individuals are planning to bring to the Summit has been very enjoyable. Because of this I wanted to share my list gear I will be bring this year.

Tenkara Summit 2017 Packing List

Clothing

  • 2 Long Sleeve Fishing Shirts: One for Saturday during the Summit, at least so I can be presentable. The second shirt will be for Sunday for fishing in RMNP (Rocky Mountain National Park) with those of you that can join us. I am hoping that having a clean shirt will keep me from stinking to much.
  • 1 Light Weight Windproof Fleece: Estes Park and RMNP are known for cooler temperatures during the fall. Having a fleece of some kind will make your days and evenings much more pleasurable.
  • 1 Pair of quick dry hiking pants: I like my convertible hiking pants due to the fact that I can wet wade in them or wear them under a pair of waders.
  • 2 Pairs of Darn Tough Merino Wool Socks: Having clean, dry socks to put on each morning is really nice. Because of the properties of merino wool my feet stay warm while I am fishing.
  • 1 or 2 Buffs: Buffs are great as I can wear them as a beanie to keep my head warm. With the versatility of the Buff I can also use it as sun protection in the thinner atmosphere in RMNP.
  • 1 Fishing Hat: I never leave home without a good quality fishing hat. I prefer a hat in a neutral color with darker fabric on the bottom of the brim to reduce glare from the water.

Gear

  • Tenkara USA Sato and Rhodo: These are my two favorite rods currently. They are definitely my go to rods especially for RMNP.
  • Tenkara USA Tapered Lines: Great casting lines are key when it comes to tenkara. I will also have at least two (2) level lines likely in the #3.5 size.
  • Tenkara USA Keeper: Line management is a major issue, especially when carrying multiple set ups. Because of this and the convenience provided by the Keeper I typically carry two (2) Keepers with fully rigged lines at all times.
  • Tenkara USA Tamo: Having a tamo is really nice for a number of reasons. One reason for having a tamo is that handling time is shorter. Secondarily, I find taking pictures of the fish is easier and less stressful on the fish.
  • Spools of 5x and 6x Tippet: My tippet selection is based on manufacturer recommendations and my kebari options. For an event like the 2017 Tenkara Summit I will be bringing more than my usual spool of each. I will bring plenty of tippet to share with others I am fishing with if need be.
  • Vedavoo Classic Sling Pack: One of my favorite pieces of gear I will be using during this Summit is my Classic Sling Pack. The design is perfect for tenkara and goes with me on 90% of my fishing trips.
  • A Fly Box Full of Kebari: My most prized possession for any fishing excursion is a box full of kebari. The more kebari I have the more fish I can target. For the Tenkara Summit 2017 I have a number of experimental patterns I am going to try out in RMNP. I am plan to share with anyone who might want to check out these patterns.
  • Waders and Boots: I think everyone is smart enough to know about waders and boots. I don’t need to expound on why I am bringing them.

Clothing and Gear

With the above list I should be ready to rock and roll! And hopefully this list will give you ideas of what to pack for your visit to the Tenkara Summit 2017 or to a future tenkara gathering around the United States or the world.
