A Sad Day at Tenkara Grasshopper

This is truly a very sad day at Tenkara Grasshopper.

I have lost a special friend and fishing partner. The fly fishing community and the tenkara community in particular has lost someone special.

The Passing of a Tenkara Icon

A few days ago I found out thru the grapevine that Doug Heggart had passed into the “Happy Fishing Grounds”. Doug was an amazing fishing buddy and one of the best sounding boards a guy could have. I got to know Doug from working with him at the¬†Tenkara USA¬†booth during a number of Denver Fly Fishing Shows.

He was passionate about tenkara both as a fly fishing guide and as an angler. Doug was an early adopter of tenkara here in the United States. I can honestly say that he was a big part of why I got into tenkara in the first place. Thru a question and answer session on the Tenkara USA forum it was suggested that I get the 12′ Tenkara USA Iwana. Doug would take not stop pestering me until I bought the rod.

Spending time at the Denver Fly Fishing Show with Doug was always a huge amount of fun. With an infectious sense of humor Doug knew how to make people laugh. He was soft spoken most of the time, but when it came to tenkara volume control was non-existent. The more excited Doug got talking about tenkara the louder and more boisterous he became. With Doug’s increase in excitement for talking tenkara the rest of us were infected as well.

Facing Closure

I will be attending the memorial for Doug “Tenkara Icon” Heggart tomorrow August 19, 2017 in Longmont, CO. I will be attending in honor of someone who meant a lot beyond fly fishing.

Doug, may you rest in eternal peace and save a few fat brownies in the Happy Fishing Grounds. When it is time for me to come to the other side I will be searching you out.

May God ever watch over you and give you the peace we all dream of.

Tight lines and tenkara my friend!!! I will miss you!!!
