Tying kebari patterns for the Tenkara Grasshopper Kebari Box is really fun for me. Episode 3 Kurobe Headstream Kebari Variant 1 is here.

Kebari Box Episode 3 Kurobe Headstream Kebari Variant 1

This is a pattern I found on Yoshikazu Fujioka-sans website My Best Streams. The Kurobe Headstream Kebari Variant 1 I tied in this episode has been very productive.

A kebari pattern like the Kurobe Headstream Kebari Variant 1 has an awesome benefit besides catching fish. It is one of the easiest tenkara kebari patterns to tie. The ease of tying this kebari lends itself well to beginning fly tiers.

Kurobe Headstream Kebari Variant 1 Materials

I have listed the materials I used in the video. Please substitute as you see fit.

Hook: Saber Hook 7221 #12

Thread: Uni-Thread Black 6/0

Hackle: Bantam Rooster Furnace

How I would fish the Kurobe Headstream Kebari Variant 1

Having spent some time on the water here in Colorado with this kebari pattern, I have found a few presentations techniques that really work.

Up-stream Dead Drift

One of the most productive presentation techniques I have used is the up-stream dead drift. My favorite way to fish most streams is work from the bottom up. I find this to be a great method as I am much harder to spot by a fish. Letting my fly dead drift back down to me seems to get the fish on the bite seeing something juicy and “buggy” like this pattern.

The Pulse

I love the Pulse as a presentation technique, especially with the Kurobe Headstream Kebari Variant 1.

To perform the Pulse, the angler simply squeezes the handle of the rod every so gently. My favorite way of describing this presentation is using social interaction. What I mean is, when you meet someone and give their hand a gentle but firm squeeze you get a sense of what is required.

The gently squeeze of the handle of the tenkara rod will make the tip bounce without being unnatural.

This is the technique that has produced the most fish on the Kurobe Headstream Kebari Variant 1.
