How do I cast a tenkara rod?

How do I cast a tenkara rod?

Casting a tenkara rod is by far one of the easiest parts of the tenkara learning curve. Because of the lack of a reel with additional line to deal with, along with the inherent responsiveness of a tenkara rod virtually anyone can learn to fish in the tenkara style.

I have found over time that with a minimum of steps 99% of the beginning tenkara angler can quickly master the tenkara cast.

  • The tenkara angler holds the rod either in the left or right hand with their pointer finger resting on top of the rod grip pointing in the direction they wish the fly to go.
  • Now the angler will hold the rod in front of them at approximately a 45 degree angle or ten o’clock.
  • Bringing the rod back at an accelerated speed and stopping abruptly at the twelve o’clock position allowing the line to extend.
  • With the line completely extended behind the angler, they will then move the rod forward at a high rate of speed and stop at the ten o’clock position allowing the line to extend out in front of them, thus presenting the fly.
