2018 Tenkara Resolutions

2018 Tenkara Resolutions

Another year is coming to an end with another one about to start. I typically avoid making New Year’s resolutions because I never keep them. That being the case, I still make tenkara resolutions every year. These are more guidelines for the coming year. So, without further ado, here are my 2018 Tenkara Resolutions.

Personal Time

2018 tenkara resolutions personal timeIn the last year I have found that I need more personal time on the water to develop productive techniques. This time will also allow me to recharge my batteries. Personal time gives me the opportunity tot explore unfamiliar waters giving me the chance to share these waters with clients.

Sharing time with fellow tenkara friends here in Colorado and hopefully around the world is a top priority in 2018. At the close of 2017 I have come to the realization that I have neglected many friends who deserve better. For this neglect I owe many of you a major apology. If you feel that you are one of those that I have neglected please feel free to call me out.

A 2018 tenkara resolution I feel passionate about is expanding my knowledge of tenkara. Having read books and browsing tenkara websites, I realize how little I really know. I also have observed other tenkara anglers in the the last year and want to learn more from them as well. If you are one of those I want to learn from, I will be tracking you down. If you are willing to share with me I will also share with you.

Guiding tenkara trips has been increasingly more fun every time I go out. In association with Tenkara USA, NoCoFlyFishing, and Minturn Anglers the opportunity to share tenkara with others has grown. Because of companies like Tenkara USA, the activity of fly fishing has become a reality for virtually anyone. Guide services like NoCoFlyFishing, and Minturn Anglers have opened doors not just for me, but also to an impressive number of anglers and non-anglers alike. Because of my associations with these companies, I resolve to introduce many more people to the joys of tenkara!!!

Tenkara Exploration

Living in Colorado for over twenty years has given me the chance to experience the wonders of the outdoor world. Recreational opportunities abound in this great state, yet there are places I have never visited. A 2018 tenkara resolution I intend to keep is to find new waters that I have never fished before. I have my go to spots where I know I can catch fish. As is common with familiarity, at least for me, is complacency. Returning to the same locales over and over takes some of the challenge out.

In the coming year, using guidance from resources such as Steve Schweitzer’s Fly Fisher’s Guide to the Indian Peaks, and Marty Bartholomew’s Angler’s Guide to Colorado, I will find new waters. This will be the year of new places and fresh starts. I will be exploring many of these areas with fellow tenkara anglers.

Volunteering

Volunteering to support fly fishing centric groups has been something I have wanted to do. Groups like Project Healing Waters (PHW), Casting for Recovery (CRC), and Trout Unlimited (TU) deserve my support.

One of the most amazing groups, in my opinion, does a great job of providing fly fishing as an activity for our veterans. Having observed what PHW does on a daily basis for our veterans, I know there is more I can do. Therefore, I intend to volunteer some quality time to the Colorado chapter of PHW. Knowing the benefits of tenkara, I believe that I can offer something very different, opening doors to a wider range of potential anglers.

Breast cancer is a horrible disease affecting many women around the world. CRF is a group who provides fly fishing opportunities to breast cancer survivors. CRF has been a group I have wanted offer more of my time to as they do have a need for more people to help out.

I am confident that tenkara would be a great additional offering to an already amazing experience for their participants. I may not be able to provide a huge amount of time as a volunteer, I will do what I can to offer anything I can.

In the never-ending pursuit of running a quality website, I resolve to offer the best content I can. Putting out quality content appears easy but it is also extremely difficult at times. I am always doing what I can to provide useful information to you , my loyal readers. As the primary content producer here, I hope that I am doing just that in 2018.

In the coming months, my intention is to offer much more here as it relates to tenkara and fly fishing. Many articles have been written and will start appearing after the first of year.

As is common with yearly resolutions, many will be broken and some will not even come to fruition. Yet, I will endeavor to keep that from happening. I may very well need a few reminders from my readers and clients, but therein lies the fun in giving myself these resolutions.

I want to wish you a Happy Holidays and an awesome New Year. Be safe out there and get those tenkara lines tight.

Great set of resolutions Graham. For me, it will be getting back to the water. I have not been fishing in a couple years due to issues with my knee. A year has passed since surgery and it is feeling much better. Besides fishing, I would also like to meetup with you and others to take more tenkara photos.

ERIK, Thank you for your comment. I look forward to hearing about you getting back on the water this year. I know how frustrating physical issues can be when it comes to fishing experiences. I am glad to hear that you are doing better after a year with a recovering knee. I would be happy to meet up with you any time that works for you to get some fishing in. As for more photography please feel free to contact me at your convenience to plan some time to get out. Have a Happy New Year and a Merry Christmas.

Hey Graham! I just want to say that though I’ve met you only once (back in March), I and my son in law had a great time. I so look forward to booking another day of fishing with you.

As for the resolutions, that’s a great list. My complements. My hope for you is that they encourage you and add joy to your life without adding stress or imbalance to you and your family. You’re a good man and you positively effect many people. Therefore I hope and pray that you and your family are richly blessed in the months & years to come.

Monte, you have no idea how much that means to me. I look forward to booking another trip with you hopefully in the very near future. And, by the way, I still have your vest here at the office. I hope as well that the resolutions I have made will add joy to my life while still allowing me to balance my family time.
It is because of people like you Monte who allow me to live the life that I want and to be able to give my family everything that they need.
As I said before I look forward to seeing you in the very near future. Please contact me at any time if you would like to discuss planning another trip.
      Your Brother in Fly Fishing,
      Graham “Tenkara Grasshopper” Moran
